Donatello founder Pietro Addis was born on the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia. When he opened our sister restaurant, Pinocchio, in 1987, it was Pietro’s dream to introduce the people of Brighton to the authentic Italian dining experience.
Pietro worked tirelessly to source fine quality ingredients for the authentic recipes on our menu, along with superb quality wines to compliment the food.
Almost 30 years later and current Donatello owner, Sue Addis is still sticking to Pietro’s tried and tested formula. We source all our wines from Eurowines – a Sommelier Wine Award winning wine company which is now part-owned by Sue’s nephew, Leo Addis. Eurowines clinched the 2013/14 gong for Italian Wine Merchant of the year in recognition of their commitment to bringing the very best Italian wines to the wider market.
Our Pinot Grigio is probably our most popular wine. We source all our Pinot Grigio from Zenato – a family-run vineyard in the Veneto region of north-east Italy. Donatello actually buys almost all of the Pinot Grigio made by Zenato – In order to check the quality at source, and most definitely not for a sun-drenched jolly, we headed to Zenato HQ on the southern shores of Lake Garda to see production for ourselves.
The team at Zenato were marvellous hosts and showed us around every corner of their sprawling winemaking estate. Naturally, we had to sample every wine several times in order to make absolutely sure that they met with the Donatello seal of approval. After a series of stringent taste tests, we were satisfied that the latest batch of Zenato Pinot Grigio meets and exceeds our requirements.
Of course, Zenato Pinot Grigio is just one of the superb Italian wines featured on our extensive wine list. We carry a huge selection of red, white and rosé wines with flavours to compliment every dish on the menu. Why not head to Donatello in Brighton Lanes and see for yourself? With 2-course meals starting at just £8.95, Donatello is the perfect place to relax and unwind over a leisurely lunch or evening meal.
